Agrigento Sicily 06 UNESCO Concordia Temple 4

Agrigento - The Valley of Temples

UNESCO site since 1997. The Valley of the Temples is an important archaeological area located in the middle of the southern coast of Sicily, near the town of Agrigento. Here are the ruins of the ancient Akragas, an important town founded by the Greeks in the VI century b.C. Akragas was one of the most important cities of Sicily during the Greek-Carthaginian and the Roman historical period. The Valley of Temples, although big, represents a small area compared to the ancient Akragas which was much bigger and extended all over the hill at the back of the present archaeological park. The most important ruin is the Temple of Concordia, one of the most preserved Greek temple in the World. Walking in the Valley is a journey in the time where we can admire the remains of art and architecural masterpieces of 25 centuries ago.

Piazza Armerina - Villa Romana del Casale

UNESCO site since 1997. Villa Romana del Casale is an ancient Roman villa of III-IV century a.D. The original building included 60 rooms among living rooms, event halls, baths, termae, gym... for a total surface of 3500 sq mt (37,700 sq ft) fully floored with mosaics. This monument is the most important historical remain of the Roman civilization in Sicily and the widest mosaics collection in Italy with decorations, portraits and amazing snapshots of the real life in the Roman Empire. The mosaic tiles are made with stones of various natural colours that have resisted the wear of time for centuries and centuries. Visiting the Roman Villa is an extraordinary unique experience for the eyesight and the mind: a dive into the past with images of 17 century ago.
